12 Coal and Grit

  jkl

Uncover the triumphs and tragedies of the coal mining industry in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Small communal pits of the early 1800's soon gave way to the giant mining operations of corporations like the General Mining Association. Mining in Pictou County has been a story of euphoric highs and devastating lows, the prosperity of the early 1900's clouded by the enormous loss of life in explosions and accidents. The fellowship among the miners was strongly evident, however, particularly in sports, music, and the establishment of lodges and unions. Concluding the exhibit is Pictou County's most recent mining tragedy, the explosion at nearby Westray Mine in 1992, which killed 26 men.
